Metsä Fibre
Construction is proceeding well at the Kemi bioproduct mill
Metsä Fibre’s new Kemi bioproduct mill is progressing according to plan and on schedule. The electric cranes, featuring artificial intelligence and machine vision, are now being tested and the wooden operating office of the mill is completed. The main electricity supply has been deployed in the various departments and test runs of technique are on-going.
The Kemi bioproduct mill is scheduled to start up and begin producing pulp in the third quarter of 2023. When completed, the mill will have a production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes of softwood and hardwood pulp per year, and it will create 0.9 million tonnes of additional market pulp capacity (0.8 softwood pulp and 0.1 hardwood pulp). It will use the best available technology (BAT) or even more advanced technology. The mill will be a frontrunner in environmental, energy and material efficiency, and it will operate completely fossil fuel-free.

Sustainable and responsibly produced pulp
At Metsä Fibre, we aim to make the most responsibly produced pulp in the world. Like all Metsä Fibre mills, the Kemi bioproduct mill will use Nordic wood from sustainably managed forests. It will use 100% of each tree and every possible side stream to maximise productivity and minimise waste, and it will also generate significantly more electricity than it uses. All of this wood will have full traceability to ensure that our entire supply chain operates responsibly. Furthermore, the new Kemi bioproduct mill will operate completely fossil fuel-free, which will help us reach our 2030 targets.
