Construction is proceeding well at the Kemi bioproduct mill
Metsä Fibre’s new Kemi bioproduct mill is progressing according to plan and on schedule. Several of the key components, including parts of the mill’s fibre line, were delivered in October 2021 and the first building was already completed in September.
The Kemi bioproduct mill is scheduled to start up and begin producing pulp in the third quarter of 2023. When completed, the mill will have a production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes of softwood and hardwood pulp per year, and it will create 0.9 million tonnes of additional market pulp capacity (0.8 softwood pulp and 0.1 hardwood pulp). It will use the best available technology (BAT) or even more advanced technology. The mill will be a frontrunner in environmental, energy and material efficiency, and it will operate completely fossil-free.
Sustainable and responsibly produced pulp
At Metsä Fibre, we aim to make the most responsibly produced pulp in the world. Like all Metsä Fibre mills, the Kemi bioproduct mill will use Nordic wood from sustainably managed forests. It will use 100% of each tree and every possible side stream to maximise productivity and minimise waste, and it will also generate significantly more electricity than it uses. All of this wood will have full traceability to ensure that our entire supply chain operates responsibly. Furthermore, the new Kemi bioproduct mill will operate completely fossil-free, which will help us reach our 2030 targets.
Reliable pulp production
The new Kemi bioproduct mill will increase our pulp production capacity so we can serve our customers around the world better. Watch the video to find out more.

The new Kemi bioproduct mill will produce bleached softwood kraft pulp and bleached hardwood birch pulp.
Kemi bioproduct mill is scheduled to begin producing pulp in the third quarter of 2023. The construction and installation work are progressing as planned and on schedule. The new 110 kV power line has now been completed, and a total of 4.5 kilometres of the new rail track has now been constructed. Construction of the port of Ajos in Kemi warehouse will also be complete by the end of the year.
With the additional capacity we will be adding an additional 800 000 tonnes of softwood pulp and 100 000 tonnes of hardwood pulp to the market.
The customer need for softwood pulp is increasing and will also increase in the future. By increasing pulp production we can provide more pulp to our customers. With our new bioproduct mill, we can ensure we have higher availability and more stable pulp quality.
Metsä Fibre uses Nordic wood from sustainably managed forests in areas where the forests grow more than they are used. The wood we use has full traceability and comes from certified or controlled forests.
Kemi mill built with Metsä’s own sawn timber
Construction of Metsä Fibre’s Kemi bioproduct mill, one of Finland’s largest building sites, requires huge amounts of sawn timber. Precisely scheduled deliveries have been arranged between the mill constructors, Metsä Fibre’s sawmills and K-Rauta Äimärautio, a hardware store in Oulu.
Production will continue seamlessly at new Kemi mill
When the new Kemi bioproduct mill comes online in the second half of 2023, the old mill will be wound down. The switchover will not affect deliveries. The additional capacity is now available for booking.
